"Discovering Las Medulas"


This project would be directed to students in the 6th grade of Primary Education. It would be related to the English Language and Social Science subjects. Moreover it works at the others areas such as Arts and Crafts and Maths.

Topic: Ancient Romans Exploding Mountains " las Medulas" Contents: " Ruina Montium" Las Medulas. The mining of the gold. Features of this land and presevation it. Ecosystems: Flora and fauna. Driving questions: How could we encourage to visit this place? How could we be protected ? What could we learnt How they did it? Activities: Before starting , students could watch a video which is produced by Consejo Comarcal del Bierzo about how the romans worked at the mine of the gold. Second activity with big group in the classroom we could make a vocabulary bank, such as : a World Heritage Site, " Ruina mountain", Roman Empire Iberian colony, open-pit gold mine, ditches, canals of water, dioptropia, chorobates , chisels ,hammers, dig ... Then, we could visit this place with a guide and its museum where they explain as the romans worked with the gold and also we could see the model in 3D andthe tools which were used by romans When we will come back to the clasroom, We divide the students in groups. One group , they would have created the model in 3D with the canals , mountains lakes of Medulas. They could use a photo of place, paperboard, glue or paste , modeling clay and colours. Other group , They would make the tools in smaller scale, such as hammers, levers, pulleys, chisels.. and make a worksheet with explanation of the tools. The last group, They could elaborate the worksheet where they would answer about how doing it, tools which were used. Which flora and fauna live in this place. Each gruop would have to explain how did it and give information about what they have learnt about this place which is a World Heritage Site.
